Professor Uses American Flag to Make KKK Hoods

If this story doesn’t convince people that we need to start defunding public universities, nothing will.

LifeZette reports that University of Miami sculpture professor Billie Grace Lynn has created a piece of so-called “art” which is going to be getting an honored place on display at the University of Miami Art Gallery: Ku Klux Klan hoods made out of American flags.

The stunt, oh-so-cleverly titled “American Mask,” was supposedly, and oh-so-originally, inspired by the infamous August demonstration of white supremacists in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Here’s a glimpse of the “art”:

LifeZette provides some background:

At Lynn’s website, she explains: “‘American Mask’ is a work suggesting that bigotry and racism are hiding behind our American flag. By using the shape of KKK hoods made from the American flags, I point to our sad history of intolerance and violence and hope that the work acts to awaken citizens to the danger of confusing bigotry with patriotism.”

While the display is not complete yet, the window aspect of the work has already caused anger on social media, according to the Miami New Times, which is housed in the same building as the gallery.

The exhibit, opening next week, will stand the U.S. flags made into Ku Klux Klan hoods “on a cart with wheels shaped like a Nazi swastika,” according to the New Times […]

Lynn told the New Times she is “from Louisiana, and the Klan is really strong there. I am from the place where these people live. I am these people in some way.”

Real talk time: Lynn is either scandalously ignorant, or wildly malicious. Probably both.

The white supremacists in Charlottesville were of course evil, repulsive, and stupid. But you know what else they were? Losers.

They have no power over America’s government or institutions. Their cultural and media presences are limited to fringe pockets with virtually no influence and absolutely no mainstream respect.

They are vastly outnumbered and universally, intensely stigmatized. Their protest was not a signifier of a real, rising threat to American minorities, but a pathetic attempt by pathetic people to relive the imagined glory of a wretched past in a world that has left them behind.

Similarly, everyone knows all about America’s past sins on slavery and civil rights. But is Lynn unaware of the fact that America ended slavery over a century and a half ago? Did she miss the fact that the civil rights battle was won for equality generations ago?

Is she somehow ignorant of the fact that every major society on earth has enslaved and oppressed their fellow human beings at one point or another, meaning America’s record is no indication of something uniquely evil about America?

Of course, there’s no shame in a sculpting instructor being wildly uninformed about history. There is, however, great shame in peddling lies you don’t need a degree to know are lies, or in using your platform to viciously slander a country that made your career possible.

But the real scandal here is not Billie Grace Lynn or her colleagues. The scandal is that Florida is a red state, yet like most red states, the legislature that controls the purse strings continues to funnel taxpayer money to these colleges without making a dime of it conditional on shaping up.

We call America’s current battle between Left and Right a culture war, but that’s not quite accurate: “war” implies that both sides are truly fighting.
